Before the prayer

The basic sequence of one rakʿah

This overview shows the essential sequence. For practical correction, also learn in person from a trusted teacher or mosque.

    Standing and takbīr

    Stand facing the qiblah and begin with “Allāhu akbar”.

    Recite Qur’an

    Recite Al-Fātiḥah; in the first two rakʿahs add another surah or Qur’an passage.

    Rukūʿ

    Bow and settle calmly in the bowing position.

    Stand upright

    Rise fully and settle in the standing position.

    Two sujūd

    Prostrate, sit calmly, and prostrate a second time.

    Continue with the next rakʿah; after the seated tashahhud, conclude with salām.
